There are a lot of unknowns regarding the future of the United States tariffs. As your business looks to determine the best way to manage its imports and exports, partnering with an FTZ (Foreign Trade Zone)
may be your solution.
What is a Foreign Trade Zone?
An FTZ is a designated area that is permitted to operate as if it were outside U.S. customs territory. This enables certain types of merchandise to be imported and stored without going through all the formal customs entry procedures. Customs duties are waived for items exported from the zone. For imported goods that will be used domestically, duties are deferred until the merchandise leaves the zone for the U.S. market.
How might an FTZ benefit your business?
Export: Store your imported goods with reduced or no tariffs.
Import: Duty deferral means you can purchase in bulk when prices are favorable without needing to pay customs or state inventory taxes on your entire supply at once, reducing the strain on cash flow. You can also dispose of any damaged goods within the FTZ, so that you only pay duty on what your will actually use.
If your business imports goods it then exports outside of the U.S. commerce stream, then customs can be reduced or even be entirely duty free.
